16th Habanos Festival|
From Monday, February 24th to Friday, February 28th, 2014, Cuba will again be the venue of the largest international meeting for the enthusiasts of the best cigar in the world: the Habano. On this occasion the event will be paying tribute to four of the most prestigious Habanos brands: Hoyo de Monterrey, Partagás, Trinidad y H.Upmann.
The last edition of the Habanos Festival was attended by more than 1,200 delegates from almost 80 countries.
The Commercial Fair will again be celebrated during the week of the Festival. In 2013, the Fair was attended by 72 exhibitors from 8 countries – Germany, Canada, China, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Panama and Cuba – and received over 2,000 visitors from the world of cigar, luxury products and business.
This year a total of 273 journalists and cameramen from 142 press bodies from more than 30 countries sent live transmissions covering the event , which continues to have an ever growing echo in the five continents.
During this 16th Edition of the Habanos Festival, the attendants – which always include first rank international personalities – will have the pleasure of tasting in exclusive the new vitolas that will be launched to the market in 2014 by Habanos s.a., and will have the possibility to discover the roots and the secrets of a century-old tradition of cigar culture in Cuba. The opening of the event will take place on Monday, February 24th, 2014 with the inauguration of the Commercial Fair at the International Convention Center Palacio de Convenciones. The Fair will continue to be the ideal moment for technical and commercial exchanges among businessmen, producers and suppliers of the cigar world.
The day will end with the Welcome Evening at Club Habana, which includes an exclusive concert of the best Cuban artists. The Nominations to the Habanos Award of the Year will also be announced, and finally there will be a Welcome Cocktail dedicated to the Partagás and Hoyo de Monterrey brands.
This year the Habanos Alliance will take place with the exclusive international beer brands Duvel, Leffe, Chimay, Malheur and Bucanero, under the direction of Belgian beer sommelier Ben Vinken.
It will be a year of interesting conferences on the most diverse themes, among them: "Habanos in the cinema", "The Germans in the Habano. Origin of the H. Upmann brand", and a conference on the Habanos Vintage with tasting of an aged Habano. Finally, there will be a conference on "Elements that have an Influence in the Combustion of Habanos", to be followed by the first contest to see which smoker obtains the longest ash.
On Wednesday, February 26, there will be a special and emotive Dinner in tribute to the Trinidad brand, with participation of the prestigious chef Ron Blaauw from The Netherlands, awarded with two Michelin stars, and of sommelier Cuno Van't Hoff in the selection of the menu and marriages.
The closing of the Festival will take place on the evening of Friday, February 28, with a Gala Dinner in tribute to H.Upmann and the Traditional Humidor Auction for the benefit of the Cuban Public Health System.

This volume was pieced together by the Habanos Regulatory Council of Protected Denomination of Origin, with the help of other Cuban tobacco companies, and it was launched during last year’s Havana International Fair, FIHAV 2012.

Over 200 photographs illustrate the process endured by the hand-rolled premium cigar through hundreds of operations from the farming all the way to the smoking moment.
The book, edited by Cuba’s Tobacco Research Institute, stands out for the beauty and luxury of pages that enthrall readers as they start skimming through them. The text intends to become the special handbook for the training of executives, factories, tobacco companies, salespeople and students at the Habano Academy, but it’s also designed as a reference for aficionados and even experts.
A well-designed multimedia add-on complements The World of the Habanos with texts, images, video, audio and information contained in the printed version.
Habanos Day Mexico|
For the second consecutive year, the Embassy of Cuba celebrate the Habanos Day, an event through La Casa del Habano, people with the tradition of fine cigars and Caribbean atmosphere of the island.
Since five p.m. started to arrived dozens of guests, to enjoy delicious Mojitos sponsored by Havana Club and Cuban typical snacks by La Bodeguita del Medio. Additionaly, there was an exclusive tasting in a special room of the embassy with the Ambassador and connoisseurs of cigars, where an expert was so innovative mezcalier pairing with a cigar Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill and mezcal Siete Misterios.
Cuba's Ambassador in Mexico, Dagoberto Rodriguez Barrera, thanked the guests for their presence.
To finish with a flourish, a live musical group played for several hours, waking up the rythm of the attendees until late at night.
Hoyo de Monterrey Limite Edition 2013|

Limited Edition Punch 2013|
Punch is one of the oldest Habanos brands, founded in the mid-nineteenth century by Don Manuel Lopez of Juan Valle. Punch, whose name comes from a humorous publication that was fashionable at the time, continues to appear in cartoon on each brand boxes with his cigar in hand, surrounded by nineteenth-century images that show the manual manufacturing Habanos, which are virtually identical to those that can be seen today in Cuba factories.
This is the first time the brand of Habanos Punch has a Limited Edition. Punch Serie D'Oro No. 2 is the band specially selected for this Limited Edition 2013. The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI by its Spanish acronym) recognizes COHIBA as "famous brand".
From the very moment of its creation in 1966, Cohiba brand began to be perceived as exceptional by smokers all over the world. Its notoriety started to grow vertiginously, because of its association with the image of Fidel Castro's figure and its connection with Habanos, the best cigars in the world.
Since notoriety is generally accompanied by the wish of competitors to imitate, plagiarize, pirate and even seizing it – as the case of COHIBA in the United States – this statement in Mexico strengthens the brand even more because of the market it represents.
Certain trademark offices and courts have declared COHIBA notorious (or notoriously known) in some occasions and as famous (or renowned) in others. For instance, in 2004, Judge Robert W. Sweet, from the South District of New York, acknowledged COHIBA as notorious in the United States of America as of 1992. Now the IMPI of Mexico is doing this, but with a higher level of social acknowledgment, since it has declared COHIBA as famous.
According to the Mexican law, the notoriously known brand is one that is recognized by a specific sector of the public or by the country's commercial circles as the result of commercial activities carried out in Mexico or developed abroad by a person employing the above-mentioned brand in relation to his products or services, or also as a consequence of the promotional or advertising policy with respect to the said brand. The famous brand, on the other hand, is the one familiar to the majority of the consumer public.
Notorious or famous brands may be pleadable even in the case when the brand is not registered in a particular country, when oppositions are presented to an application for registration made by any third party other than the title bearers of the brand, or when cancellation actions are taking place against already granted infringed registrations or even against the brands that just being used as such. Therefore, the category of notorious or famous brand grants it extra value and additional force in the defense against potential infractors.
Although the most common practice is to issue the Statement of notoriety or fame of the brand upon request of a party, being carried out the procedural steps for the opposition to the brand registration or cancellation processes, there are some countries that declare said notoriety upon request of a party without considering the necessary opposition or administrative cancellation process, as in the case of Mexico.
The formal act of delivery to Habanos, S.A. of this Statement was held on Monday, September 10th, at the factory of El Laguito, cradle of Cohiba brand. The acknowledgment was presented by Dr. José Rodrigo Roque, General Director of IMPI, who traveled to Cuba on the occasion of the event accompanied by other officers from that Mexican institution.
The event, organized by Habanos S.A., counted with the attendance of executives from different institutions: Mr. Oscar Carvajal, Embassy in Cuba, representatives from Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment Ministry of Cuba, director and deputy director from the Cuban Office of Industrial Property, and officers from Tabacuba and Habanos S.A, as well as other executives from the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property Executive (IMPI), among others.
An important number of journalists from national and international press accredited in Cuba were also present at the event. The event concluded with a cocktail offered to the participants having a good opportunity to enjoy the Habanos of Cohiba brand in its Siglo IV vitola.

Mexico Won the 11th International Habanosommelier Contes|
Well established as one of the Habano Festival’s major events, the last stretch of the contest featured a painstaking end for the jury due to the skills and knowledge on Habanos showed by those who made it to the grand finale.
The best evaluation was for Mexico’s Luis Garcia, followed by Chile’s Andres Arteaga y Cuban rookie competitor Daniel Reyes.
The International Habanosommelier Contest, that’s become one of the most effective tools to spread the art and tradition of Habano all around the world, has held eleven edition that have gathered contestants from nearly two dozen nations. The end results have had a major impact as a way to get in touch with this product and the Cuban culture.
The winner of the XI Habanosommelier International Contest is Luis García from Mexico for his preliminary pairing of Tequila Centinela Extra Añejo 3 años with Wide Churchills of Romeo y Julieta and he has won the final with Petit Robusto of Hoyo de Monterrey and Edmundo of Montecristo This 23-years-old Habanosommelier works at Vinoteca in Guadalajara (Jalisco, Mexico) and he advices at the best restaurants of Guadalajara city such as I Latina, La Grelha and Anita Li. This is one of the most awaited announcements of the Habanos Festival, because of the the growing interest in expert advice for the best Habano to taste.

The opening of Casa Chazaro was cause for celebration on last February __, an event that brought together different personalities from politics, business, and gourmets, a place that encourages the great pleasures, with its large smoking lounge, enjoy the walk-in humidor with its wide variety of brands and vitolas and worthy of so nice atmosphere bar. Later on, Daniel approached each person to show the body of Mezcal and invite them to try it.
Alejandro Bandínez, marketing and operations director of La Casa del Habano, gave a brief explanation about the history of this old Cuban brand Partagas that was represented on one of the most important vitolas, Serie D No. 4. Joining Alejandro in this marriage, mezcalier Daniel Abdelmassih introduce us Mezcal Bru-Xo 1,2 and 4 creating and exceptional combination of new flavors.
At the end of the presentation Limantour restaurant prepared exquisite appetizers for all the guests and finally concluding with another magical night.

The Happening and La Casa del Habano carried out an elegant tasting-mariage on Wednesday night November 16 with an exquisite taste of the cognac Hennessy. Having as headquarters the sophisticated restaurant Frank's in "Polanquito". They prepared a beautiful table especially for this event where the guests began to arrive one by one and were received with a aromatic cocktail with cognac Hennessy mixed with cranberry juice.
At eight o clock pm, Cesar Parra, brand director of Hennessy, gave a perfect explanation about the origins of this elegant drink and its various ingredients to ensure that guests will join the flavors and smells of the same.
Afterwards, Alejandro Bandinez, marketing and operations director of La Casa del Habano, offered the distinguished cigar "Esplendido" of the recognized Cuban brand Cohiba and step by step our guests discovered the flavor and history of this fine tobacco. To conclude this magical night, our host Frank’s restaurant prepared exquisite appetizers for this important event, many of the guests remained in the place until late night.

The Happening y la Casa del Habano organizaron una exquisita cata maridaje para degustar el sabor del habano Open de Montecristo, acompañado del whisky Glenmorangie y vivir una experiencia plena de sabores.
Los invitados se dieron cita la noche de ayer en la terraza del restaurante Varela, ubicado en el Centro Comercial Antara, para disfrutar de la cata dirigida por Horacio Quintana, quien guió a los invitados a través del mundo del whisky Glenmorangie, sus orígenes, sabores y procesos.

In both tequila categories, the Cava de Oro brand took top honors, doing far better in the extra-aged category than in the aged one.
The winning matching proposals were those between the Piramide Montecristo II and the Cava de Oro aged tequila, and the Partagas Series D No 4 and the extra-aged spirit from that same brand.
A special moment in the course of the session was the official signing of the Habanos-Tequila Alliance, two unique and unrepeatable products hailing from this neck of the woods.
Mexican ambassador to Cuba Gabriel Jimenez Remus, who attended the session as a guest, said he was happily pleased with the presence of his country’s tequila distilling industry in this edition of the Habano Festival.
Mr. Jimenez Remus added that the matching of these two representative and genuine products, like tequila and habanos, “is just another step forward in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.”

Havana, 16 February 2010. The twelfth edition of the Habanos Festival will take place from 22 to 26 February in Havana (Cuba). Around a thousand privileged cigar enthusiasts from over 70 countries will have the chance to attend the tobacco world's most important event, to see and try for themselves Habanos s.a.’s new launches for 2010.
During the XII Festival, Habanos s.a. will present the new Cohiba Behike line, the most exclusive Habanos s.a. has ever launched. They will be available at the Gala dinner – the climax of the Festival on 26 February. Its unique characteristics will be announced during the week.
On Wednesday 24 February, at a dinner specially dedicated to the “Woman in the Habano”, you will finally be able to taste a cigar conceived as a tribute to womankind, the new vitola called Julieta, which will become part of the Romeo y Julieta brand. On Monday 22 February, after an exclusive concert by the maestro Chucho Valdés at the Gran Teatro de La Habana which will follow the launch of the 2010 products, those attending the welcome Gala will finally be able to enjoy the new Wide Churchills, a heavy ring gauge habano which also joins the Romeo y Julieta brand.
All star celebrity meeting point
In recent years the Festival has aroused interest from many celebrities who didn’t want to miss the chance to enjoy the world’s finest tobacco on its home turf: Cuba. This year’s guests will include Opera singer Sarah Brightman, the European and Ryder Cup golf champion - who won the 2010 Dubai Open just a week ago - Miguel Ángel Jiménez, and Oscar-winning producer Stephen Evans, actress Mia Maestro as well as 2010 Grammy-winner Chucho Valdés and this year’s Latin Grammy winner Ivan Lins.
Over the course of the week there will be the Trade Fair, the International Seminar and the traditional visits to Habanos plantations and factories. This year the factories visited will be El Laguito - the Cohiba factory - and La Corona, the home of Romeo y Julieta.
The Alianza Habanos - Tequila will be celebrated, with tasting of the finest añejo and extra añejo tequilas accompanied by habanos, continuing the traditional association of Habanos with the world’s finest products.
The International Habanosommelier Contest, in its 9th edition, is another of the Festival highlights, with a growing following seeking advice from the sommelier when choosing a habano.
In addition, there will be a special event during Festival week, in the shape of an exclusive viewing of the British film “Cosi”, produced by Oscar winner Stephen Evans, directed by Christophe Menaul, and starring Opera singer Sarah Brightman and actors Richard E. Grant and Mia Maestro.
During the Gala Evening to round off the proceedings of the XII Festival, there will be the awards ceremony for the 2009 Premios Habanos with 3 categories (Production, Business and Communication) and the Grand Auction of Humidors, true works of art made from valuable woods by the most prestigious Cuban craftsmen. The entire proceeds, as usual, will be donated to the Cuban Public Health System. Last year the amount donated was a staggering 980,000 euros.

COHIBA, a new positive decision in USA in favor of CUBATABACO|
December 15th, 2009, The Cuban cigar company Cubatabaco has won a court order enjoining General Cigar from continuing to use the COHIBA trademark in the United States.
Federal judge Robert W. Sweet, of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, issued the injunction on December 14, 2009.
COHIBA is the world’s most famous and coveted cigar. It is sold everywhere except the United States, where the U.S. embargo on trade with Cuba prevents its sale. General Cigar, a major U.S. cigar company, sells a Dominican-made cigar under the COHIBA name in the United States.
In issuing the injunction, Judge Sweet found that, at the beginning of the cigar boom in the United States in 1992, “General Cigar selected COHIBA for a new product in order to exploit the reputation and goodwill of the Cuban COHIBA” in the United States. Judge Sweet additionally found that General Cigar “continues to profit from the Cuban COHIBA’s goodwill” in the U.S.
General Cigar has stated that it will appeal Judge Sweet’s decision. Under the terms of the injunction, General Cigar is permitted to sell its Dominican-made cigars under the COHIBAname until its appeal is decided.
Judge Sweet still has before him Cubatabaco’s claim to recover the profits General Cigar has obtained since 1992 by exploiting the COHIBA’s reputation. No date has been set yet for proceedings on Cubatabaco’s claim.
Michael Krinsky and David Goldstein, of the New York law firm Rabinowitz Boudin Standard Krinsky & Lieberman, P.C., the U.S. attorneys for Cubatabaco, said today that “Judge Sweet’s decision fully vindicates the fundamental principle that a company cannot be permitted to reap what it has not sowed, that it cannot be permitted to exploit the goodwill and reputation of another company’s product.”
Judge Sweet found that the COHIBA’s unique reputation for excellence is so strong that the U.S. consumer “primarily associates the designation COHIBA with the Cuban COHIBA,” even though the COHIBA cannot be sold in the United States. Judge Sweet found that this lead General Cigar to “to plagiarize the mark” by “intentional copying.”
Judge Sweet’s decision is the latest round in a 12 years litigation over the COHIBAtrademark in the United States.

Monday, 10 August 2009. IEPT and Tequila Esperanto joined efforts to make a marriage of this prestigious brand and our vitola Regata of the new line Montecristo OPEN, this event was held at the Restaurant La Lima located at Calle Tamaulipas # 94 in Colonia Condesa Hipodromo, Mexico City, were tasted four different ranges of tequila: Blanco, reposado, añejo and extra añejo.
So we have the presence of José Alberto Galán Fernández, from H. Upmann factory delighting us with different sizes and strengths of Habanos and Ernesto Garza sommelier who guided us during the marriage, in addition to our distinguished guests. To conclude this magic night, were offered various special dishes exquisitely prepared and seal of the house, Restaurant La Lima.
New Cuban Warranty Seal|
As a way to keep updated to our Exclusive Distributors all over the world, it's necessary to notify the changes to be occurred as regards as to the Cuban Warranty Seal.
From now on, a new Warranty Seal will be gradually introduced in all the packaging where two new elements are to be added. On the right hand, a hologram as a security item will be added and on the left hand, next to the Cote d´ Arms, a bar code will personalize every package.
This label will always be placed from the upper left side of the box or display, leaving 3 to 6 mm from the edge and to be bending up to the front right over the center of the Cote d´Arms whenever possible.
This Seal has been developed through a base of synthetic paper with special characteristics such as an autodestructive feature before any attempts of removal and with several maximum security techniques added.
- Non-transferred label. Any attempt to remove it, will cause invalidation of the seal by self destruction.

- The holographic band will show a bicolor text in 2nd and 3rd dimension,

The fact is that there will always be a time in which both old and new Warranty Seals designs will exist at the same time in the markets. The length of time in which the two seals will coexist is not so easy to foresee because it depends on the stocks and on the rotation of the different products.
